Campaign Co-Chairs HEIDI GERGER

Dear Capital Campaign Benefactors,

Fr. Donald Nesti, CSSp, Rabbi David Lyon

Benjamin Warren, Heidi Gerger, Ralph Appelbaum

The exhilaration of reaching our groundbreaking goal has made 2017 a very memorable and historic year for HMH. We are very excited about “Building Our Future” together with our incredible group of HMH Capital Campaign donors. Your generous support allows us to honor the Survivors’ legacy and teach the dangers of hatred, prejudice and apathy. Beginning this journey together in November 2014, we envisioned a beautiful 57,000 sq. ft. facility capable of educating future generations of visitors seeking to learn about the Holocaust and its many important lessons from those that have gone before them. As we garner our resources to move forward with our educational mission at the new Lester and Sue Smith Campus , we look forward with anticipation to the new opportunities that present themselves. The Museum will feature a greatly expanded “Bearing Witness: A Community Remembers” core exhibition providing new scholarly information concerning the Holocaust. We will further educate our community on Human Rights. Younger children will now be able to experience, through young diarists, what it means to be persecuted on the basis of identity or be caught up in international conflict and war. Four new classrooms will expand education opportunities, including summer camps held at the Museum. Holocaust education through performing arts and the study of the art of Samuel Bak will touch visitors in a new way. Throughout our expansion we will remember the courage of our Survivors by teaching others and telling their stories. It is because of your unbridled generosity that the future of Holocaust Museum Houston remains bright. Our $49.4 million goal is within reach and the new Museum is tentatively scheduled to open in April 2019. We wish to personally thank you for supporting the Capital Campaign and demonstrating that as an upstander, one can build a more humane society.

A Celebration of Hope was held on July 22, 2017 for the public to visit one last time. The Lights of Hope for the Future Ceremony was held July 23, 2017, for Survivors, Museum members and families to move the ceremonial light of hope from one building to the next and from generation to generation.

Remembering our Past. Building Our Future. 2014-2018 Capital Campaign began as a need to expand the Museum for future generations. While always honoring our Survivors’ Legacy, HMH leaders envisioned new ways of engaging students and visitors making the Museum relevant to the younger visitors.

VELVA AND FRED LEVINE: Velva and Fred Levine were inspired to learn about the Holocaust by their good friend and Survivor, Harvey Katz. With Fred’s support Velva began working with the Holocaust Education Center and then they became Founding Members of the Museum in 1996. She has been devoted to the Museum and the Survivors ever since. Seeing the need for HMH to grow, Velva and Fred were delighted to help support the railcar as a powerful symbol of the Holocaust. They are looking forward to the expansion and seeing the young leadership who will carry on telling the Survivors’ stories.

JUDY MYERS: Judy Myers’ parents, Ruth Schnitzer, of blessed memory, pictured and George Schnitzer, of blessed memory, were Founding Members of HMH. Their volunteerism motivated Judy to become a docent 16 years ago. She did not want her mother’s story as a Survivor lost. As a docent, she is inspired by seeing individuals touched by what they learn on a tour. The dedicated group of HMH volunteers has become family to Judy, especially since her mother’s passing. Judy feels it is important to set an example of the importance of community giving for her children and grandchildren, just as she was taught by her parents. She enjoys the support of her children for her Capital Campaign Planned Gift. Judy continues to work to honor her parents and other Survivors at HMH.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT LAURIE AND DR. MILTON BONIUK: Dr. Milton Boniuk was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in 1932 and remembers listening to the radio as a child. He saw his father suffer as he learned about the rise of Nazi Germany and its occupation of many European countries, including Poland. His father had left his family, including eight siblings, in the early 1920s and came to Canada His parents met in Montreal and they married and moved to Glace Bay in 1929. Milton and Laurie met in Philadelphia while he was a resident at Wills Eye Hospital, and after additional training was recruited to come to Baylor College of Medicine in 1961. When plans

KISHA AND JASON ITKIN: Kisha and Jason Itkin are people of action. Having lost family members in the Holocaust, Jason believes it is important to “never forget.” Kisha’s family fought against the atrocities of the Holocaust. They want to continue their family legacy at HMH because the Museum “acts” through education and teaching what is right. Kisha and Jason recognize that young people view the world through new eyes and learn through interactivity. In order to inspire future generations to act against hate and bigotry, HMH must provide new state-of- the-art technology to engage students in the purpose and mission of the Museum and tell the Survivors’ stories. RICHARD LEIBMAN: Henia Leibman, of blessed memory, was a child of Survivors. With her husband Richard, they learned together about the Holocaust after they left South Africa in 1977 and arrived in Houston with their three children. They began a journey to build their travel business and discover their family’s history as it related to the Holocaust. Through their research, the Museum became vitally important to them as a family. Richard and Henia were Founding Members of HMH, and Henia was

were made to build the Holocaust Museum, he was approached by Dr. Barry Hyman to contribute, and theBoniuks generously funded the Boniuk Library. While serving on the Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniuk was impressed by the large number of children attending the Museum, but felt that visits by the family unit would be more productive. The Boniuks would like HMH to encourage visits by religious groups that would conduct a service, visit the Museum, and enjoy a meal together. They are very impressed with the quality of other programs that HMH has developed.

SANDRA WEINER: Sandra Weiner began talking about a Holocaust exhibit in the early 1990s. A committee, led by Sandra and Martin Fein, was formed to envision how to go about creating the exhibit. As their ideas formed, the committee became aware of the importance of having a place where school children could visit and have classes to learn about the Holocaust. They became eager to create a place where they could tell the non-Jewish Houston community about

a Founding Board Member. It is important to Richard that, through his gift to the Capital Campaign, Henia will be remembered and their three children and seven grandchildren will never forget the atrocities of the Holocaust and how it affected their family. It is rewarding for Richard to see young people tour theMuseum as education is vital, and that is why he would like to grow the Henia Leibman Fund to enable the education of more Houston-based teachers at Yad Vashem in Israel.

the Holocaust. The committee began looking for a place to build and they hired exhibit designer Ralph Appelbaum to tell the very personal stories of Holocaust Survivors in the Houston area. Sandra is excited that the new Museum will have four classrooms which will enable more than triple the number of students to visit the Museum. She would love to see HMH offer an educational trip to Israel for people to learn more about the Holocaust.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT (CONT ’ D)

KRISTA AND MICHAEL DUMAS: Still lovingly known as the “New Orleans evacuees,” Krista and Michael were welcomed to HMH and Houston after Hurricane Katrina. They value the positive message of inclusiveness and acceptance they have found with their friends at HMH. They enjoy giving alongside friends with the same philanthropic goals for tolerance, a quality education and using art to teach lessons about prejudice and hatred. HMH’s powerful exhibitions and lectures have especially impacted Krista over the years. Krista and Michael look forward to a future of remembering the Holocaust and honoring the Survivors, as well as creating awareness of the current atrocities being experienced around the world. They would like to see a strong educational message that engages the youth through art to communicate the mission of HMH. (Not pictured, Krista Dumas) GINGER BLANTON: As a child growing up after WWII in the ‘40s and ‘50s, Ginger was always aware of the horrors of the Holocaust, as well as the devastation of segregation which she witnessed all around her. Growing up in Texas, the impact of prejudice against Hispanics was evident, as it is today. Ginger believes prejudice in all forms has terrible consequences to our world. She chose to support HMH because fighting prejudice is so important. Education has always been the catalyst for change, and the Museum provides classes to children all

over our city to tell the story of the Holocaust and to provide tools to fight prejudice and bullying. As the Holocaust survivors can no longer tell their stories, the Museum will be here to make sure they are not forgotten. By enlarging the Museum, HMH will be able to serve more children to carry this important history into the future. This will always be an ongoing challenge and Ginger is very glad to have a part in it.

THE HONORABLE FRED ZEIDMAN: Being Jewish, Fred Zeidman feels a major responsibility to see that the world “never forgets.” As part of the closest generation that was actively involved in the Holocaust, we know it happened and will happen again. It is our obligation to carry the Survivors’ legacy to the next generation by protecting the continuity of the Jewish people. Fred feels it is vital to support HMH because it is a continuous reminder of the Holocaust. The Capital Campaign endowment will provide reserved funding to protect the programs and continue education in our community. HMH is ground zero for teaching all of us about the viciousness of genocide, hatred and bigotry. It is critical to always be a live beacon to depict the lessons of the Holocaust to the whole world.

TERR I AND BR IAN CARESS: Growing up in a small town without a Jewish population, Brian Caress was the first Jewish personTerriCaressevermet.Whilevisitingthe United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, she became aware of the vulnerability of the children of the Holocaust and identified with the Holocaust through her love for her children. Brian and Terri both agree that we should “never forget” the story of the Holocaust. Brian was very touched by the stories of Survivors in his youth and believes education is our most valuable asset to help others connect to the Holocaust and bring people together. New to HMH, Terri and Brian hope that their gift to the Human Rights Gallery will be an example to their children, help non-Jewish visitors relate to the Holocaust and inspire others to take action.
