LETTER FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

http://butterflies.hmh.org/. It is a beautiful website that encourages visitors to color a butterfly or post their own creation on social media. The site also offers visitors the opportunity to purchase our 20th Anniversary Book that highlights 100 of our most remarkable butterflies. It is a unique publication and I am sure you will enjoy the experience. Of course, the Butterfly “Taking Flight” Exhibition is best viewed in person. Over 1500 butterflies are on display in The Mincberg Gallery waiting for you to enjoy their beauty and their inspiring messages. The word gratitude only begins to describe the great admiration and appreciation I hold for all of our visitors and volunteers. You have made our 20th Anniversary truly memorable through your financial assistance and time. Your support has enabled HMH to produce incredible programing and outstanding exhibitions. HMH is truly “taking flight” in its outreach to the greater Houston community, applying the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides to teach the dangers of hatred, prejudice and apathy. Never forget that HOPE>HATE!

It is my privilege to share with you the Holocaust Museum Houston 2015-2016 Gratitude Report. This has been a year of great excitement and outreach for Holocaust Museum Houston as we celebrated our 20th Anniversary on March 3, 2016. I am in awe of our dedicated Houston-based Survivors who, through sheer will and determination came together to fundraise, plan, and build this remarkable institution. Unsure of the public reception, the Museum opened its doors on March 3, 1996 with one paid employee, Mr. Roger Hendersen, who is currently HMH’s head of Security. All other Museum departments were managed by volunteers. Little did the Survivors and volunteers know that over a 20 year period, more than 2.1 million people would walk through the Museum’s doors. This year, the HMH staff has found inspiration and joy working on The Butterfly Project which was launched at Neiman Marcus on March 10th by our Butterfly Project Chair, Tali Blumrosen. Over the course of 20 years, The Butterfly Project has fired the imagination of millions of people to create more than 1.5 million stunning butterflies. Handmade from every conceivable material, color and form, these delicate creations memorialize the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust. On March 11, 2016, as part of the Museum’s 20th Anniversary commemoration, six traveling displays went on view. The collections will be seen at a variety of public spaces across Houston through 2017. We have been fortunate to exhibit these beautiful butterflies, housed in case displays, in high visibility locations thanks to our friends at United Airlines at Bush International Airport and Hobby Airport. We were thrilled when our case displays “landed” at Allen Center I & II Buildings where several thousand people viewed them daily. As we go to press, we are hopeful that our butterflies will be displayed at NRG Stadium during the Super Bowl! I invite you to join me as our butterfly cases “take flight.” Find details about The Butterfly Project when you visit
