The exhilaration of reaching our groundbreaking goal has made 2017 a very memorable and historic year for HMH. We are very excited about “Building Our Future” together with our incredible group of HMH Capital Campaign donors. Your generous support allows us to honor the Survivors’ legacy and teach the dangers of hatred, prejudice and apathy. Beginning this journey together in November 2014, we envisioned a beautiful 57,000 sq. ft. facility capable of educating future generations of visitors seeking to learn about the Holocaust and its many important lessons from those that have gone before them. As we garner our resources to move forward with our educational mission at the new Lester and Sue Smith Campus , we look forward with anticipation to the new opportunities that present themselves. The Museum will feature a greatly expanded “Bearing Witness: A Community Remembers” core exhibition providing new scholarly information concerning the Holocaust. We will further educate our community on Human Rights. Younger children will now be able to experience, through young diarists, what it means to be persecuted on the basis of identity or be caught up in international conflict and war. Four new classrooms will expand education opportunities, including summer camps held at the Museum. Holocaust education through performing arts and the study of the art of Samuel Bak will touch visitors in a new way. Throughout our expansion we will remember the courage of our Survivors by teaching others and telling their stories. It is because of your unbridled generosity that the future of Holocaust Museum Houston remains bright. Our $49.4 million goal is within reach and the new Museum is tentatively scheduled to open in April 2019. We wish to personally thank you for supporting the Capital Campaign and demonstrating that as an upstander, one can build a more humane society.

A Celebration of Hope was held on July 22, 2017 for the public to visit one last time. The Lights of Hope for the Future Ceremony was held July 23, 2017, for Survivors, Museum members and families to move the ceremonial light of hope from one building to the next and from generation to generation.

Remembering our Past. Building Our Future. 2014-2018 Capital Campaign began as a need to expand the Museum for future generations. While always honoring our Survivors’ Legacy, HMH leaders envisioned new ways of engaging students and visitors making the Museum relevant to the younger visitors.

Two and one-half years into the Campaign, 100% of the funding required to break ground was achieved. On June 20, 2017, at the public Capital CampaignKick-off the Lester and Sue Smith Campus was announced with a historic $15 million gift from Lester and Sue Smith. Announcements continued at the Ecumenical Breakfast to inform the religious members of our city. In July 2017, the Museum relocated to a temporary space while Museum construction commenced.

On October 18, 2017, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the LEED certified 35,000 square-foot expansion. The Lester and Sue Smith Campus will be a total of 57,000 square feet designed to serve and educate substantially more students and visitors each year.
